CHARISMA AND COURAGE
One important element of courage is how you communicate your message. Itâs significantly easier to share important messages that people will listen to if you use charisma, demonstrate confidence, and back up your ideas with examples and reasoning. Charisma can help you build momentum by drawing people into your ideas and capturing their attention.
Itâs important to note that charisma wonât get you very far if you choose the wrong moment to share your message. If the information is something that you hope will change your company or possibly take people by surprise, itâs important to find a good moment when everyone is able to pay attention and have time to consider your words. It may not be a good idea, for example, to speak about such things around the table at a team luncheon.
I had a chance to practice this myself when I was fifteen and spending time at a winter camp. There was a small group of girls who were not fond of one of my friends, and they began to spread a rumor that she had robbed money from another girl. I checked the room and saw that they had tried to put money in her pack. I had to choose an appropriate moment to approach the director of the camp to try to convince her not to expel my friend. I took the time to calmly convince her what I believe had happened and why my friend deserved to remain at the camp. I did my best to speak clearly and charismatically while also presenting reasoning and evidence to support my ideas.
And it helped. My friend wasnât expelled, and the situation was sorted out, with apologies offered on all sides. For the rest of camp, she didnât experience any more bullying or rumors. In this case, courage was required, as there were things that needed to be stated loudly and clearly.
It can often happen that similar, unethical practices come up at companies, and itâs important to bring those things to light and share your opinion, independent of the possible outcome. While many leaders fear backlash from speaking up in this way, it usually will not result in the person getting fired, as that would demonstrate guilt and culpability from the superiors.

How to Recognize Courage in Yourself and Others
Courage is about fearlessness. Itâs about being in a position where you no longer care to stay inside your comfort zone. Whether itâs small or big, you decide that the time has come to find a way through or to push for a change, despite the fact that it may bring you discomfort or difficulties. There is a kind of energy that develops before courage, an energy that pushes you to say something out loud or take action when you know you should.
